Audi might have hidden its next-generation R8 supercar in an animated Hollywood spy flick.

The German brand says its chiselled RSQ e-tron is just a fictional concept, but will form a key part in "building awareness for e-tron full-electric mobility as part of the Audi brand story".

It will be the four-wheeled star of the Spies in Disguise cartoon, starring Will Smith as super-spy Lance Sterling and Tom Holland as his nerdy scientist side-kick Walter Beckett. The film is is due in cinemas late in 2019.

The fully-electric supercar features autonomous driving capabilities, a holographic instrument cluster and special features for secret agents.

Its angular design mimics that of the real-life PB18 shooting brake concept that made its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours in August, which was already billed as a "high performance supercar of tomorrow." With the RSQ e-tron featuring a more traditional coupe-like body style, it indicates Audi may be assessing ways of expanding the R8 range in the future with different body variants.

Its not the first time Audi has previewed its supercar in a Hollywood blockbuster, and with Will Smith behind the wheel, as the first-gen R8 was disguised under the bodywork of the original RSQ concept in 2004s sci-fi flick, I, Robot.
