New hardcore 2019 McLaren Senna GTR teased
The new track-only McLaren Senna GTR has been teased ahead of its official reveal. First shown in concept form at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the GTR will get various tweaks to make it even faster and more focused than the regular road-going Senna.
We’ve only seen one sketch so far, but that shows that the Senna’s already extravagant aero will become more spectacular for the GTR. The most obvious changes are the deep front splitter and huge rear wing. The latter sits further back on the car’s body, while its endplates extend much lower behind the car’s rear arches. This, according to McLaren, results in a ‘coupling’ effect between the airflow from the diffuser and the wing, increasing low-speed downforce.

The Senna’s active aero remains, meaning the GTR is capable of generating 1,000kg of downforce.
The wider fenders are in place to accommodate larger front and rear tracks, and house centre-lock wheels wrapped in Pirelli slick tyres. The combination of the added downforce and tyres are enough to generate braking forces of over 3 G, with peak forces 20 per cent higher than in the road car.
The Senna’s double wishbone suspension has received attention, too: the geometry, springs dampers and anti-roll bars are all adapted from McLaren’s GT3 racing programme.
The Senna GTR’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine has been mildly breathed upon; with an 814bhp output representing a 25bhp increase over the road car. Torque remains unchanged at 800Nm.
Combined with an as-yet to be confirmed weight - which will be less than the road car’s 1,198kg - the GTR has an even greater power-to-weight ratio than the regular Senna. The GTR’s diet includes the removal of the car’s airbags, infotainment screen and folding driver’s display, and there’s a race-spec steering wheel in place of the standard item. However, air conditioning is still standard.
McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said: “Excelling on the track underpins the heritage of the McLaren brand and is as important and relevant today as it has ever been.
“The track-only McLaren Senna GTR will have more power, more grip and more downforce, and post even faster lap times; the very limited number of customers who secure this car will be buying the closest experience you can get to a race car without actually lining up on a circuit grid.”
Just 75 examples of the Senna GTR will be produced, with production starting in September 2019 when production of the road-going model finishes. McLaren has already sold all of them, at a cost of £1.1million plus taxes.
