Nissan unveils 370z Project Clubsport 23
The Zed’s not dead, baby.
Ten years into its lifecycle and Nissan is still finding ways to keep the gracefully aging 370Z alive, the latest example receiving a thumping heart transplant and flash Nismo makeover.
Unveiled at the 2018 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the 370Z Project Clubsport 23 might be the greatest configuration of the iconic coupe yet. Better still, it could pop into dealerships sometime in the future.
Central to the project is an engine swap that sees the old naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6 removed for a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 - the mini-Godzilla VR30DDTT found in the Infiniti Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe. It increases the rear-wheel drive vehicle’s peak output from 245kW to over 298kW of power with 475Nm of torque.
The mule for the development was a second-hand 2012 370Z – not that you’d tell much difference to a brand new one – and Nissan decided to keep a Nismo six-speed manual mated to the 3.0-litre block. As Infiniti’s twin-turbo V6 has never been mated to a stick-shift transmission it required a new clutch disc, cover and flywheel assembly developed by MA Motorsports. It joins the motor to a Nismo GT Pro-Carbon two-way limited-slip differential in the back.
Further additions include a 76mm dual exhaust system that exits through the body’s licence plate panel, a cold air intake, Nismo suspension tweaks, Nismo three-piece body brace set, KW Variant 3 coil-over shock kit, Eibach rear springs, upgraded cooling system, Nismo HC track brake pads, Z1 Motorsports two-piece slotted rotors and Nismo stainless steel brake lines.
Positioned as the ultimate 370Z track car, the gear is half-protected by a racing-style cabin and engine bay fire suppression system.
Completing the look outside are Nismo front and rear bumpers, an APR carbon-fibre splitter, Seibon TS-style carbon-fibre bonnet with racing point pins, 18-inch Rays alloys and a blinding burnt orange vinyl wrap.
Inside, the interior sees the nearest homage to the original 240Z, dotted with diamond-pattern stitch leather panels around the cabin. Practical race day parts are Sparco QRT-R seats, a roll cage, competition six-point harness and Sparco R383 steering wheel with a Bell Works Rapfix hub.
It’s a lot of gear and underpins what tuners of this potential future cult classic will do. But if it all looks like a headache of parts to track down there’s good news in the pipeline, with Nissan suggesting it might offer a “builder’s kit” that “may appear alone or packaged together” sometime soon.
