Mazda has released pricing of its upgraded MY19 CX-5 range, which finally gets the brand’s much-praised 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, as well as a bunch of equipment and safety-feature enhancements.

The new turbocharged petrol engine commands a modest price premium on the top two CX-5 grades – GT and Akera – but injects a serious dose of performance. Producing 170kW and 420Nm when fuelled with 91RON unleaded (though capable of having its power output bumped to 186kW when juiced with 98-octane premium), Mazda claims the turbocharged CX-5 knocks two seconds off the regular 2.5 petrol’s 0-100km/h time (now 7.7sec instead of 9.7sec).

There is a fuel-consumption penalty with the boosted engine – 8.2L/100km on the official combined cycle compared to 7.4L/100km for the non-turbo 2.5 – but given the considerable jump in outright performance, combined with a massive improvement in driveability effortlessness thanks to the turbo engine’s 67 per cent increase in torque, that’s a relatively insignificant price to pay.

This is the second upgrade for the CX-5 range this year, arriving just seven months after Mazda introduced ride and refinement tweaks to the second-gen CX-5 back in April. And there are further dynamic refinements accompanying this MY19 upgrade, including changes to suspension and steering systems to achieve “more linear vehicle behaviour and a higher-quality ride feel”, along with the addition of ‘G-Vectoring Control Plus’ to increase vehicle stability at high speed.

Every MY19 CX-5 model now gets an expanded ‘i-Activesense’ safety suite featuring auto headlamps and wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assistance, driver attention alert, and autonomous emergency braking (which Mazda calls ‘Smart Brake Support’) covering a much broader speed range.

MY19 CX-5s also gain Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, a new 7.0-inch TFT info display in the instrument cluster, relocated and restyled ventilation controls (ala Mazda 6) for more premium operation and appearance, revised rotary-switch surfacing, white LED licence-plate lighting, and a new grey-metallic (instead of dark silver) colour for the 17-inch alloy wheels on Maxx Sport and Touring.

Uniquely, the CX-5 Akera scores interior upgrades in a similar vein to the Azami LE version of the CX-9. Premium ‘Dark Russet’ Nappa leather, black headlining, ambient LED interior lighting, genuine open-pore wood inserts in the dashboard and door trims, a frameless auto-dimming rear-view mirror and unique 19-inch alloy wheels in a brilliant-dark colour mark the 2019 CX-5 flagship.

Mazda claims it has added around $2000 worth of additional kit to the top-selling Maxx Sport and GT grades while only increasing the list price by $880.

The upgraded MY19 CX-5 line-up went on sale in the final week of November.
